- The Why Behind the Wait
A couple of years ago, someone said to me, "So, you procrastinate like me," and those words have stuck with me, replaying in my mind ever since. It’s one of those statements that just won’t let go. I know I tried to explain the difference between procrastination and what I was actually dealing with—whether it was my anxiety or ADHD—but I’m not sure I got through. This morning, as I struggled to tackle a task, that statement echoed in my mind once again. It became obvious that the only way to quiet this thought is to clearly define the difference between procrastination and the challenges that come with anxiety or ADHD. These mental illnesses often create barriers that cannot simply be overcome with willpower. While the outcome may look the same—tasks left undone—the reasons behind those uncompleted tasks are far from interchangeable. For those who simply procrastinate, understanding that anxiety and ADHD present distinct challenges can be an eye-opener. It’s not just about choosing to delay; for many, it’s about facing a struggle that is not visible from the outside. Acknowledging this difference can help you recognize the impact of your words and actions. Instead of dismissing others’ challenges as mere laziness or irresponsible, it’s vital to cultivate awareness of the complexities at play. I can relate to the struggle of a procrastinator, as I have had to overcome other behavioral tendencies myself like perfectionism, fear of failure and thumb sucking. This understanding can encourage more thoughtful interactions and lead to a deeper respect for the battles that others may face. If everyone is educated on these distinctions I present, it can foster empathy and support all around. Although frustrating, procrastination is not necessarily a mental illness, but often a choice. However, if you s uffer from chronic procrastination that affects your daily life or is troublesome in any way , psychotherapy can unearth the root cause of your procrastinating and help you develop strategies so you are able to complete tasks more efficiently or without delay. Whether the difficulty to complete tasks stems from mental illness or not, acknowledging it is the first step, so here is some useful information! Procrastination: Intentional Delay : Procrastination is often a choice, even if it's unconscious. You’re aware of what needs to be done, but delay it for a variety of reasons like not feeling motivated, distracted by other activities, or simply not wanting to do the task right away. Avoiding Effort : The task may seem too boring, tedious, or hard, so you put it off in favor of something more enjoyable, knowing you’ll have to do it eventually. Lack of Urgency : There's usually a belief that there's still time to complete the task. The pressure doesn't feel strong enough yet, and that leads to putting things off until the last minute. Temporary : Often, when the deadline looms, people can push through procrastination and finish the task, although it may be stressful. Emotion-driven Delay : It's often driven by emotional states like laziness, dread, or a lack of motivation—but at the core, it’s a voluntary action. Procrastination is often viewed as a behavioral tendency rather than a mental illness. It can be classified as a type of avoidance behavior, where an individual delays or postpones tasks despite knowing that doing so may lead to negative consequences. Here are some ways to compare procrastination to other related concepts: Behavioral Habit : Procrastination can be seen as a habit, similar to other patterns of behavior that people fall into, like nail-biting or overeating. While these habits may stem from various triggers, they are not classified as mental illnesses. Coping Mechanism : For some, procrastination may act as a coping mechanism to deal with stress or overwhelming feelings. This is similar to how people might engage in distractions like binge-watching television or scrolling through social media instead of tackling important tasks. Time Management Issue : Procrastination can also be understood as a problem with time management. This is comparable to poor organizational skills or difficulties in prioritizing tasks, which can affect anyone regardless of mental health status. Motivational Challenge : It can be likened to a motivational issue where individuals struggle to find the drive to complete tasks. This is not a mental illness but rather a challenge that can affect productivity. Self-Regulation Difficulty : Procrastination often involves issues with self-regulation, similar to other behaviors that require discipline, like maintaining a diet or exercise routine. By framing procrastination in these terms, it helps clarify that while it can be frustrating and have negative impacts, it is not inherently linked to mental illness. Understanding this distinction can provide a clearer perspective for those who procrastinate. Anxiety: Paralyzing Fear : Anxiety causes a feeling of being stuck. It’s not about choosing to put something off, but more about being unable to start because of overwhelming fear or stress related to the task. It might be fear of failure, criticism, or just the enormity of the task itself. Overthinking : Anxiety can lead to overthinking every aspect of a task. You might feel like nothing you do will be good enough, so you avoid starting altogether. This can lead to procrastination, but it’s rooted in the anxiety, not in laziness or simple delay. Physical Symptoms : Anxiety can bring about physical responses (racing heart, sweating, tight chest) when thinking about the task, making it feel even more daunting. Feeling Out of Control : It can feel like the task is controlling you instead of you controlling the task. You want to get it done, but the mental and emotional barriers make it seem impossible, creating a sense of helplessness. Procrastination through Anxiety : Sometimes people procrastinate because their anxiety about the task is so high, they feel incapable of dealing with it, but it’s not a voluntary choice—it's a response to overwhelming worry. ADHD: Executive Dysfunction : ADHD affects the brain’s executive functions, which makes planning, prioritizing, and starting tasks extremely difficult. It’s not a matter of choice; ADHD creates genuine neurological barriers to getting things done. Distractibility : People with ADHD often intend to complete a task, but get easily distracted. This isn’t procrastination, but rather a brain that’s wired to jump from one thing to another without being able to focus on the original task. Time Blindness : With ADHD, it’s common to have a distorted sense of time, where tasks feel either overwhelming and distant or urgently close, leading to difficulty managing time effectively. Impulse Control : ADHD can also lead to impulsively doing something else (checking phone, starting a new project) without consciously deciding to procrastinate. It’s more like your brain hijacks your focus. Frustration & Guilt : Unlike procrastination, where the delay is a choice, ADHD-related inaction often leads to feelings of frustration and guilt. You want to do the task but feel like your brain is working against you. Overthinking, fear, distractions and daydreaming can lead to missed opportunities. For someone with anxiety, this reflects the struggle to act due to overwhelming fear or panic attacks. For someone with ADHD, getting distracted can be described as an uncontrollable response to stimuli in the environment. It's often unintentional, stemming from a difficulty in regulating focus rather than a conscious choice. This distraction is not simply a bad habit; it is a fundamental aspect of how our brain processes information. Tasks that require sustained attention can feel overwhelming, making it easy to veer off course when faced with even minor interruptions or interesting stimuli. D istractions can stop someone with ADHD from starting or finishing tasks, and support can help them stay focused and overcome those distractions. The importance of planning and careful consideration, contrasting it with the negative outcomes of hasty actions. Those with anxiety may find it difficult to plan effectively due to constant worry or second-guessing, which is why having support and guidance can be crucial in developing productive habits, emphasizing that support can help counteract the paralysis caused by irrational worry. For someone with ADHD, the importance of planning and careful consideration is crucial, as support can provide guidance and accountability, helping to transform intentions into completed tasks and prevent the pitfalls of impulsive decisions. Each has unique challenges, but understanding the difference can help frame why certain tasks are not completed and avoid the self-blame that often comes with ADHD and anxiety. For anyone who has felt misunderstood, I hope this brings clarity and connection. I hope it fosters compassion in others who may not fully grasp these struggles. It is important to remember that procrastination, while frustrating, does not carry the same emotional or neurological weight as anxiety or ADHD. And that’s why it is crucial to see the difference clearly. Key Differences : Choice vs. Involuntary : Procrastination feels like a choice—putting off a task even when you know you could do it, while anxiety and ADHD make it feel like you can’t do the task even though you want to. Motivation vs. Blockage : Procrastination often stems from a lack of motivation or desire to do the task, while anxiety or ADHD cause mental or emotional blockages that prevent you from acting, even if you’re motivated. Temporary vs. Chronic : Procrastination tends to be situational and can often be overcome with enough pressure or motivation. With anxiety or ADHD, it’s a persistent issue that occurs regardless of how important the task is. As I reflect on that phrase, "so, you procrastinate like me," it becomes clear that the difference is not always easy to explain. It is not just a matter of putting things off—it is the overwhelming pressure that comes with anxiety and ADHD. This morning, when that thought resurfaced, I remembered how I had to explain the difference, between putting it off and struggling just to start. It wasn't just about avoiding tasks, but about facing battles that are fierce, yet often invisible. I have come to understand that blaming myself only adds to the anxiety I already feel. The struggle isn't simply about putting things off; it is about dealing with the deeper challenges that come with anxiety and ADHD. Knowing this, we can better advocate for ourselves and seek the appropriate strategies and support. If I brought in the effects of PTSD and Autism, it becomes clear that not getting things done is often beyond one's control. The challenges presented by these conditions can make even the simplest tasks feel monumental. PTSD may cause overwhelming anxiety or flashbacks, making it hard to focus, while Autism can bring sensory sensitivities and difficulties with change, both of which can hinder productivity. On paper, it might seem like I should be accomplishing nothing, but that is far from the truth. I do manage to get things done out of sheer determination. It is a painful path, struggling through each task, but every positive outcome brings a glimmer of hope that one day I’ll conquer these challenges—even though realistically that isn't going to happen! Support is essential for those with mental illness because these challenges often go beyond mere choice or willpower. With understanding and encouragement, individuals can find the strength to confront their tasks instead of being held back by their thoughts. For me, it is not just about completing a task; it is about the relentless cycle of intrusive thoughts and anxiety that surrounds it. I find myself trapped in lengthy conversations in my head, trying to motivate myself to take action, only to be met with overwhelming resistance. If only it were as simple as just getting it done! But with support, I can break free from that cycle, tackle the task at hand, and find the peace of mind that comes from knowing I am not battling this struggle alone. Ecclesiastes 11:4 “Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.” Proverbs 21:5 “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”
- Own It or Owe It: The True Cost of Accountability
My experiences selling items online confirmed my thoughts on how disrespectful it is for people to not follow through on their plans. I encountered too many individuals who made an agreement, but then failed to follow through, showing little regard for their commitments. This recurring pattern was discouraging, prompting me to reflect on a deeper issue. I couldn't help but wonder if this lack of accountability is a generational trend—a departure from the values of the past, where a person’s word was their bond. It raised questions about the importance of holding oneself accountable in an era where commitments can feel increasingly fleeting and where God’s presence in people’s lives seems less pronounced. This fading reliance on spiritual guidance has contributed to this growing disregard for personal responsibility. Being held accountable means accepting responsibility for your actions, choices, and commitments. It’s about owning up to what you say and do, and following through on your promises. Accountability matters because it builds trust and respect—two things you need in healthy relationships, both personal and professional. Accountability usually comes into play in situations where commitments or responsibilities are shared. Think of things like family obligations, work projects, and even friendships. When you say you’ll do something, like help out with a project, keep a secret, or be there for a friend, others expect you to follow through. When you hold yourself accountable, you’re setting a standard that says, "I’m serious about my word and my actions." If you don’t hold yourself accountable, it can erode trust, leading people to question your reliability. Trust is built on promises kept. Who Should Hold You Accountable? It’s often those closest to you who hold you accountable—family, friends, and colleagues. These are the people who know you well enough to understand your strengths, weaknesses, and goals. They care about your growth and success, so they’re in a good position to check in on whether you’re keeping up with your responsibilities. However, the most impactful accountability often comes from within. God holds you accountable by inviting you to reflect on your actions and decisions through the lens of your faith. This divine accountability is a pathway to personal growth, guiding you toward a life filled with integrity and purpose. When you stray from this path, God gently nudges you to recognize the impact of your choices, encouraging you to realign with His teachings. By holding you accountable, God helps you grow, learn from your mistakes, and develop a deeper relationship with Him, reminding you that true freedom comes from living in accordance with His will. This accountability isn’t meant to instill fear or guilt; instead, it’s a loving reminder that you have a purpose and a calling. When you have internal accountability, you set high standards for yourself and stay committed, even when no one is watching. External accountability is still valuable; sometimes you need someone else to help you recognize when you’re veering off course. But the combination of internal and external accountability creates the most effective structure for personal growth. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” The Downsides of Avoiding Accountability When people aren’t held accountable, the negative effects can add up. Ignoring this vital aspect of life can lead to a cycle of unaddressed issues that compounds over time. Without accountability, people can start making excuses, blaming others, or avoiding responsibility altogether. Over time, this can lead to a lack of growth, trust issues, and sometimes even resentment from those who feel let down. Accountability keeps you grounded and focused, but avoiding it can lead to bad habits and missed opportunities for self-reflection and improvement, potentially losing sight of your purpose and direction.. In a work setting, for example, failing to take responsibility for your actions can cause a ripple effect, burdening colleagues who must compensate for your lack of accountability. The absence of accountability not only affects your relationships but can also lead to a disconnect from God’s teachings, leaving you unprepared for the consequences of your choices in both this life and the next. Indeed, neglecting accountability can lead to dire eternal consequences. When you choose to evade responsibility, you risk not only your present relationships but also your spiritual well-being. Without accountability, you may find yourself entangled in habits that draw you away from God's path, reinforcing a lifestyle that strays from His teachings. This detachment can lead to a life void of purpose and growth, and ultimately, it carries the weight of eternal destruction. By embracing accountability, you align yourself with God’s will, ensuring that your actions today reflect the values that lead to eternal life and fulfillment in His presence. Romans 14:12 “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” Why People Avoid Accountability Being held accountable can feel uncomfortable because it forces you to confront your own flaws and shortcomings. It’s much easier to avoid difficult truths than to face them head-on. Many individuals resist accountability, perceiving it as criticism or judgment, particularly if they already feel insecure. This fear of exposure and vulnerability is a natural reaction, causing many to retreat into denial rather than confront their realities. Yet, the Bible teaches that embracing accountability is essential for spiritual growth. It cultivates humility and encourages believers to rely on God's grace for transformation. By resisting accountability, you miss opportunities to deepen your faith and experience the fullness of God’s love and forgiveness, which ultimately empowers you to live in a way that honors Him. Recognizing your flaws can be daunting, especially when it feels like an admission of failure. This challenge can lead some to fear the implications of their actions or the judgment that might come from God and others. As a result, individuals may prefer to hide in the shadows rather than step into the light of accountability. However, accepting accountability doesn’t have to be a negative experience. In fact, it can be a significant source of growth and strength. When you’re open to being held accountable, you allow yourself to learn from mistakes and move forward in a healthier way. On the contrary, avoiding accountability often leads to complacency, causing you to fall into cycles of poor decision-making. Proverbs 12:1 "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid." What Happens to People Who Aren’t Held Accountable? When someone isn’t held accountable, they often miss out on opportunities for growth. They might continue repeating mistakes, feeling stuck, or never reaching their full potential. They might start to believe that their actions don’t have real consequences, which can lead to problems in relationships, work, or personal development. It’s easy to mistake your outward success for true growth. Sometimes, people who harm others seem to prosper without facing consequences. But temporary success doesn’t mean lasting fulfillment. In the end, choices that go unchecked and actions that harm others bring their own form of collapse, even if the impact isn’t immediate. This is why accountability is so vital: it keeps us mindful that every action has weight. Accountability teaches you to respect your commitments, think about the impact of your actions, and strive to be a reliable, trustworthy person. Without accountability from those we trust and respect, there’s a risk of believing that actions don’t have lasting consequences. It might feel difficult at times, but in the long run, being held accountable—by yourself or others—helps you become the best version of yourself. Psalm 92:6-7 Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand, that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever."

- Hurricane Linda: A Look Back
Hurricane Linda has caught my attention, especially as I monitor the approach of Hurricane Milton, a Category 5 storm currently threatening Central Florida. Milton has rapidly transitioned from a 65-mph tropical storm to a 160-mph major Category 5 hurricane within a 25 hour period. It is a lot to process, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and the loss of life and destruction. I was thankful to get distracted from Milton for a brief time and inspired to write this post. My curiosity led me down a path, as it often does, when I noticed storms in 2024 named the same as my son, Chris, and his father, Leslie—my first husband. That got me wondering about hurricanes that share my name. It turns out there have been several storms named Linda over the years. This post briefly touches on the history of storms named Linda across various regions of the world. Any similarities to me, are completely coincidental—or are they? Year: 2021 Hurricane Linda (as seen in the video) was a significant storm in 2021. It formed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean on August 10 and peaked as a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. Linda didn’t make landfall but passed near the Hawaiian Islands after weakening, bringing showers and increased surf to east-facing beaches Year: 1997 Hurricane Linda, which formed in 1997, was an extremely powerful storm in the Eastern Pacific. At its peak, it was a Category 5 hurricane, with sustained winds reaching 185 mph (295 km/h), making it the most intense hurricane recorded in that region until Hurricane Patricia in 2015. It had a central pressure of 902 millibars, a record for the Eastern Pacific at the time. The storm began as a tropical wave off the coast of Africa before crossing the Atlantic and eventually developing into a tropical depression on September 9, 1997. Over the next few days, it intensified rapidly, becoming a major hurricane south of Baja California. Its quick intensification was remarkable, as it transformed from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in just about 30 hours. Despite its strength, Hurricane Linda mostly stayed over open water, limiting the damage. It passed over Socorro Island, causing approximately $3.2 million in damage. In California, however, its remnants led to severe weather conditions, resulting in 8 deaths and $68 million in damage due to flooding and mudslides. Eastern Pacific Ocean : Hurricane Linda occurred multiple times with the most significant in 1997, a Cat 5 storm that was the second-strongest hurricane in the Eastern Pacific at the time. 1985 - minimal tropical storm 1991 – Category 3 hurricane 1997 – Category 5 hurricane 2003 - Category 1 hurricane 2009 - Category 1 hurricane 2015 - Category 3 hurricane 2021 - Category 4 hurricane Western Pacific Ocean : In 1997, Tropical Storm Linda (also known as Openg in the Philippines) was particularly destructive, especially in Vietnam, causing over 3,100 fatalities and marking it as one of the most catastrophic storms in the region. Australian Region : Cyclones named Linda were recorded in 1976, 2004, and 2018. These cyclones primarily stayed at sea or made minor impacts, with the 1976 cyclone making landfall in Northern Australia. Conclusion As I brace for Hurricane Milton, I reflect on the history of storms named Linda to keep my mind off any impending doom. Our area can expect hurricane-force winds within the next 48 hours from Milton. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the expected path of this storm, as we prepare for whatever may come our way. - Byte-Sized Learning: AI in Academics
Initial Thoughts In a world increasingly reliant on technology, the boundaries of traditional learning are being tested. A recent legal battle involving the parents of a Massachusetts teenager has brought this issue to the forefront. Accused of cheating for using an artificial intelligence tool in his history assignment, the student's plight raises significant questions about academic integrity, the role of technology in education, and the ethics of AI usage in academic settings. This post looks at the implications of this case, comparing traditional learning methods of older generations with contemporary technological tools available to younger generations, and offers a framework for ethical AI integration in education. As AI becomes more integrated into society, it is important to teach proper use strategies to students instead of concentrating on the punishment for using AI. The Case Overview The situation began when the teenager utilized AI to assist in his research for a history paper. While he allegedly did not use AI to write the paper itself, he was accused of cheating by his school, resulting in a zero on the assignment and disqualification from the National Honor Society. The parents, shocked by the severity of the accusations, decided to take legal action against the school, asserting that the punishment was unjust, in violation of their son's civil rights, and detrimental to his academic future. Educational Practices Then and Now Library Dependence : During previous decades, students relied on libraries for research, using encyclopedias, reference books, and other physical materials. This required critical thinking and comprehension skills, as students had to sift through vast amounts of information and select relevant data. Typewriters and Manual Work : Students typically used typewriters to compose their papers, which encouraged them to carefully consider their words and structure due to the difficulty of making changes. This process fostered a deeper understanding of grammar, spelling, and writing structure. The Role of Technology : Technology plays a pivotal role in modern education, shaping how students access information, engage with content, and collaborate with peers. The speed at which technology has progressed can be overwhelming, making it challenging to keep up with the constant changes. With the rise of the internet and the rapid advancement of AI, it becomes clear that these recent developments not only enhance learning experiences but also offer new ways for overcoming challenges in education. The Rise of the Internet : The introduction of the internet and search engines like Google revolutionized research, allowing students instant access to a wealth of information. However, this also led to issues of reliability, as not all sources were credible. AI as a Tool : AI chatbots and other tools now provide immediate assistance, potentially reducing the time and effort required for assignments. Yet, this can lead to ethical dilemmas when students use AI in ways that bypass traditional learning methods. AI as an Accommodation : AI could be utilized to support students who may struggle with completing assignments, offering them the assistance they need to succeed. AI can help foster a more inclusive environment in the classroom. Ethical Implications and Risks of AI in Education AI Tools and Academic Integrity : The definition of cheating has evolved with the rise of AI. While using Google for research was generally accepted, the same standard has not yet been established for AI tools. The development of different types of AI presents additional challenges for maintaining academic honesty. ChatGPT and Similar Language Models : These AI systems can generate essays, answer questions, and provide summaries, which students might use to bypass doing their own work. Grammarly : While primarily a writing assistant that checks grammar and style, students might misuse it to rephrase or enhance their writing without truly engaging with the content. QuillBot : This paraphrasing tool allows users to reword sentences and paragraphs, potentially enabling students to submit work that isn’t their original writing. AI Essay Generators (e.g., Jasper, EssayBot) : These tools can create full essays on a given topic, which students might use to submit work that they didn't write themselves. Plagiarism Checkers (e.g., Turnitin, Copyscape) : While meant to uphold academic integrity, students might use them to identify sections of their work that are too similar to existing content before submitting their papers, allowing them to make adjustments instead of creating original work. Original Work or Collaboration : Original work, in the context of using AI, means that the student has actively engaged with and contributed to the content beyond simply using AI-generated suggestions. It involves integrating their own thoughts, insights, and edits, ensuring that AI serves as a tool for enhancement rather than the primary creator. Undermines Learning or a Modern Tool : If a student uses AI to generate content, it raises questions about the balance between leveraging technology and developing independent skills. On one hand, it might seem like a shortcut, potentially reducing the need for critical thinking and problem-solving. On the other hand, using AI effectively could be viewed as a modern skill, similar to using calculators or research databases, where understanding how to work with the tool is part of the learning process. Dependency on AI Tools Dangers of Dependency : While AI can enhance learning by providing grammar checks, structural suggestions, and research assistance, there is a danger that students may become overly reliant on these tools. This could hinder the development of critical thinking and analytical skills. Risks of Using AI : Students may opt for AI-generated responses rather than engaging deeply with the subject matter, leading to a superficial understanding of complex topics. This reliance on AI can affect their face-to-face interactions, diminishing their ability to articulate thoughts and engage in meaningful discussions, which are crucial skills in both academic and real-world settings. Learning Outcomes of Using AI It's Nothing Personal : While AI can produce high-quality content quickly, it may lack the personal touch and nuanced understanding that comes from a student's individual research and reflection. An Instant Writing Coach : Students who utilize AI for corrections or feedback, rather than as a crutch, can still enhance their learning experience and improve their writing skills. Just as spellcheck helps identify mistakes, AI can guide students toward better understanding and refining their ideas. Collaborative Learning : Brainstorming Buddies : Students have historically sought help from peers and teachers for writing assistance. In a similar way, AI can serve as an additional resource to bounce off ideas and inspire the creative process. A structured approach to using AI could mirror traditional collaborative efforts, ensuring that students remain the primary authors of their work.. Teamwork Supports Diversity : AI can facilitate a collaborative process that mimics real-life teamwork scenarios. By engaging in dialogue with AI, students can brainstorm ideas, receive constructive feedback, and refine their arguments through iterative discussions. This back-and-forth exchange fosters essential teamwork abilities as they learn to articulate their thoughts and respond to diverse perspectives. Enhanced Perspectives : Collaborating with AI allows students to combine their unique human perspectives with the vast knowledge and data processing capabilities of AI. This creates a diverse approach to problem-solving and idea generation. Access to Varied Insights : AI can provide diverse data sets and viewpoints that may not be readily available to individual students. This helps broaden their understanding of topics and fosters a more inclusive learning experience. Cultural and Contextual Understanding : AI can be programmed to understand and analyze diverse cultural contexts, encouraging students to consider different perspectives in their work. This interaction supports a more holistic view of the subject matter. Promoting Inclusive Collaboration : Working with AI can help students develop their teamwork skills in a modern context, learning to engage with technology in ways that value different contributions—both human and artificial. Legal and Educational Framework Clear Guidelines are Needed : This case highlights the need for educational institutions to establish clear guidelines on AI use. To ensure fair and effective use of AI, institutions should consider the following Academic AI Standards. Define Acceptable Use Policies: Clearly outline what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate use of AI in academic settings. This could include specifying when AI tools may be used for research assistance, brainstorming, or proofreading but prohibiting their use for completing exams or assignments. Establish Plagiarism and Copyright Policies: Update existing plagiarism policies to address AI-generated content. Institutions should clarify whether AI-assisted work must be cited, and provide guidelines on how to properly attribute such contributions. Create Data Privacy Standards: Given that many AI tools collect and store user data, educational institutions should develop privacy policies that protect student information. This may include working with AI developers to ensure data is securely managed and meets legal standards. Promote Transparency Requirements: Encourage students to disclose when AI has been used in their work. This transparency can help instructors differentiate between genuine student input and AI assistance, maintaining academic integrity. Provide Training and Resources for Staff and Students: Legal frameworks should also mandate that educational staff receive training on AI tools and their implications, ensuring they are equipped to monitor and guide proper AI use. Additionally, students should have access to resources that teach responsible and ethical use of AI technology. Implement Consequences for Misuse: Institutions should establish clear consequences for the misuse of AI, including penalties for students who violate the established policies. These penalties should be aligned with the severity of the infraction and provide a pathway for education and rehabilitation when appropriate. Integrate AI into Education : By blending AI assignments into the curriculum, educators can teach students how to use AI responsibly while fostering their ability to critically evaluate information. Students Show There Work : Schools could require students to submit their AI chat log alongside their AI-assisted work, demonstrating their thought process and ensuring that they are actively engaged in their learning. AI Integrated Assignments : Teachers could have students write a two page paper in class then use AI to refine it or provide alternative perspectives. By monitoring the process and facilitating discussions, teachers would be providing a valuable tool to their students. Encourage Responsible AI Use : By learning to use AI responsibly, students would learn how AI can enhance their work, rather than replace it. This develops critical thinking, as students evaluate how best to integrate AI tools while maintaining their own voice and creativity in their assignments. Closing Thoughts The legal battle surrounding the Massachusetts teenager's use of AI in his assignment underscores the urgent need for clarity in educational policies regarding technology's role in learning. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our lives, it is essential for educators, students, and policymakers to engage in a dialogue about ethical AI use. Encouraging students to disclose when AI has been used promotes transparency and academic integrity. By openly acknowledging AI assistance, students learn to take responsibility for their work and demonstrate honesty in their learning process. It also helps educators understand how AI is being used, allowing them to provide guidance on its appropriate use and to differentiate between student input and AI-generated content. Furthermore, this practice helps students develop skills in integrating AI as a supportive tool, rather than relying on it as a substitute for their own understanding. Rather than fearing technology as a replacement for traditional learning, we must embrace it as a tool that can enhance education while upholding the values of integrity and originality. I genuinely wish the student the best as they work through this difficult situation. I hope their family has the means or can find the financial support and community backing they need during this time. This case could set an important precedent for how schools handle AI use, and it’s crucial that we find a balanced approach that supports students while maintaining academic integrity. It is imperative to remember that each day is an opportunity for learning, growth, and the celebration of knowledge. Isaiah 28:10 "For it is: Do this, do that, a rule for this, a rule for that; a little here, a little there."
- Beyond Words: A Relationship Reality Check
Sometimes, you might find yourself in a relationship that feels unbalanced—where you're told you are valued and loved, but the actions don’t match the words. It’s common to feel like an afterthought when someone only reaches out to you when everything else in their day is done. Despite being told that you’re important, if the behavior doesn’t align with those words, it can be confusing and hurtful. It’s important to recognize when a relationship doesn’t quite align with what you need and deserve. Relationships should be a two-way street, built on mutual care, effort, and respect. It’s natural to want to feel like a priority, especially when you see the other person making time for others throughout their day. Whether it’s friends, family, or neighbors, seeing someone give so much attention and support to others while you receive only the leftover time can make you feel isolated and unimportant. It’s not unreasonable to want to feel included and prioritized in someone’s life, especially when they have plenty of time and energy to give to others. If someone can only make time for you when they’re finished with everything else in their day, it may signal that your needs and feelings are not a priority. And while it’s perfectly okay for people to have full, busy lives, it’s also valid to want a relationship where your needs are considered equally important. Between your responsibilities, errands, and the demands of daily living, your schedule is just as full. Yet, despite your own busyness, you make a conscious choice and consistently find ways to make time to prioritize them above most everything else. It’s a reflection of your willingness to nurture the connection, even when it seems like their attention is elsewhere—even when it feels like you’re always the one left waiting. It’s not about being selfish or demanding; it’s about wanting to feel genuinely valued. It’s about wanting to be treated as a priority, not just an option. It’s okay to want someone to show you that you matter, to text you during the day, or to give you even a small moment of their time. If someone truly cares, they will make those efforts. If you’ve tried expressing your feelings, offering compromises, or asking for small gestures—like a quick text or a brief call—and the response remains the same, it’s a sign that your concerns are not taken seriously or are being dismissed outright. In these moments, it’s crucial to remember that you deserve a relationship where your emotional well-being is met, not ignored. You need to consider if this relationship truly meets your needs. You deserve to feel valued, seen, and heard. You deserve to be with someone who shows you that they care in ways that matter to you, not just when it’s convenient for them. It’s not selfish to want this; it’s a healthy expectation for any meaningful connection. You shouldn’t feel guilty for asking for more or for seeking a relationship that aligns better with your values. Your emotional well-being is your responsibility to protect. If someone continually makes you feel like you’re not a priority despite knowing how it affects you, it may be necessary to set boundaries. It’s not easy, especially when you care about the person, but it’s essential for your own peace of mind and self-respect. If someone truly cares about you, they’ll make an effort to adjust and meet your needs. And if they don’t, it’s okay to recognize that and prioritize your own happiness and well-being. In some cases, this may mean having a difficult conversation, explaining that while you appreciate their words, their actions aren’t aligning with what you need from the relationship. Other times, it might mean taking a step back and evaluating whether this is the kind of connection you want to keep investing in. It’s self-care to recognize when someone’s behavior doesn’t match what you deserve, and it’s a reminder that your feelings and needs are valid. Don’t settle for a relationship where you feel like an afterthought. Seek connections that uplift you, where the other person values your presence and shows it through consistent, caring actions. If you’re not receiving that, remember: it’s okay to seek more. It’s okay to want love and support that meets you where you are, and it’s okay to walk away from anything less. It’s a reminder that your feelings are valid and that you don’t have to settle for less than you deserve. Song of Solomon 8:6 "Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame."
- Clocked and Loaded: Daylight Saving Time Debate
Welcome to the clock-shifting conundrum that takes you forward in time, only to take you back! It's a discourse that has captivated minds and divided opinions for decades! You wake up to the gentle rays of sunlight peeking through your curtains, signaling the start of a new day. As you wake for the day, you ponder the concept of Daylight Saving Time (DST) — a biannual ritual that prompts intense debates not only in the United States (US), but across the world! Daylight Saving Time is a practice of setting the clock forward by one hour during the warmer months to extend evening daylight. This time shift occurs in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Proponents advocating for its benefits and detractors pointing out its drawbacks. Let’s get started with this time-twisting saga to unravel the complexities of this tick tock debate. Not to be confused with the Tik Tok debate, that's a whole other story! History of Daylight Saving Time The concept of Daylight Saving Time was first implemented during World War I as a means to save energy by maximizing daylight during the longer days of summer. Since its inception, DST has seen numerous changes and adaptations globally. Various countries have adopted DST with diverging policies on when to spring forward and fall back. Arguments in Favor of Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Proponents argue that DST helps save electricity as people tend to use less artificial lighting during longer evenings. Studies have shown that DST can lead to reduced energy consumption during the brighter evenings, aligning human activities with natural light patterns, resulting in energy savings and a more sustainable environment. Increased Productivity Advocates of DST claim that the extended evening daylight encourages people to engage in recreational activities and socialize after work, leading to increased productivity and overall well-being. Longer daylight hours are believed to boost mood and motivation, translating into higher efficiency levels. Imagine having more daylight after work for outdoor activities or late shopping excursions—DST offers extended hours to make the most of the sunlight, benefiting both leisure and economic sectors. Economic Benefits Supporters point to the economic advantages of DST, noting that extended daylight hours promote consumer spending and boost various industries such as retail, entertainment, and tourism. The increased daylight provides more opportunities for businesses to cater to customers, resulting in economic growth. Safety Improvements One of the key arguments supporting DST is the potential reduction in accidents and crime as a result of increased daylight during peak hours. Improved visibility in the evenings is believed to enhance road safety, which promotes safer commuting and outdoor activities, leading to a safer environment for communities. Health Benefits More sunlight exposure can positively impact mental health by reducing seasonal depression associated with dim, gloomy evenings. Additionally, the extended daylight hours encourage outdoor activities, supporting physical wellness and an active lifestyle. Arguments Against Daylight Saving Time Health Concerns Critics argue that the biannual time changes associated with DST disrupt our internal body clocks, leading to sleep disturbances, fatigue, and decreased productivity. In addition, opponents raise concerns that the abrupt change in sleep patterns can have negative health impacts. These include an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular issues shortly after the time changes. The sudden shift in time can take a toll and have lasting effects on individuals' health and well-being. Minimal Energy Savings Despite claims of energy conservation, some studies indicate that the actual energy savings from DST are marginal at best, bringing into question its purported environmental benefits. Advances in technology and changes in energy consumption patterns have reduced the significance of the energy conservation argument in favor of DST. Inconvenience and Confusion Detractors of DST highlight the significant inconvenience and confusion caused by the time changes. The biannual adjustments can disrupt operations for both individuals and businesses, leading to notable productivity losses and financial setbacks. Moreover, the need to adjust clocks twice a year can be a hassle, complicating schedules, appointments, and technological devices that do not update automatically. Agricultural Challenges Critics of DST highlight the adverse effects on farmers and agricultural practices. The time adjustments can disrupt livestock schedules, which rely on consistent feeding and milking times. Additionally, changes in daylight can interfere with planting cycles and harvest timings, making it difficult for farmers to maximize crop yields. As a result, these disruptions can pose significant challenges for the agricultural sector, leading to reduced productivity and financial losses for farmers and higher prices for consumers. Regional Disparities Certain regions may not reap the same benefits from DST as others, raising concerns about the equity and effectiveness of this time-shifting practice. For instance, states in the northern U.S. experience longer daylight hours during summer, making the time change more beneficial. In contrast, states in the southern U.S. may not see significant advantages from the clock adjustments, leading to questions about their necessity. Current Trends and Changes In recent years, there has been a growing movement advocating for the abolition or modification of DST in various regions. Legislative proposals aiming to alter or eliminate DST altogether have sparked public interest and debate around the globe. Additionally, regions that do not observe DST at all, such as Arizona and Hawaii, highlight the inconsistencies within the system, creating confusion for businesses and individuals who operate across state lines. These disparities emphasize that a one-size-fits-all approach may not adequately serve the diverse needs of different communities. According to recent surveys on U.S. public opinion regarding daylight saving time, about 74% of people want to put an end to the biannual clock changes. Meanwhile, 25% support continuing the current system of adjusting clocks twice a year. A small minority, around 1%, remain indifferent to the issue altogether. These numbers suggest that while most Americans favor a change, there’s still a split on whether to adopt permanent daylight saving time or stick to standard time year-round. Personal Thought I have a deep fascination with clocks that’s evident throughout my home. They’re scattered in every room and even on my computer, creating an atmosphere of timekeeping. Adding clocks to this website, and even this post, showcases my enthusiasm for timepieces! Whether it is the numbers or the uniqueness, clocks bring a smile to my face—hands down! Some clocks only show the correct time twice a day, while others require a bit of mental math to decode. For instance, my car clock is eight minutes fast, so when I need precise time, I automatically add those eight minutes in my head. Another clock in particular, the footprints clock, has brought me daily comfort and peace over the last forty years! Each clock tells its own story, and I dream of bringing even more unique and fun clocks into my life one day. I could spend hours browsing my favorite clocks on Amazon! I used to change my clocks faithfully with the arrival of daylight saving time, but now I’ve adopted a more relaxed approach. If a clock doesn’t have the capability to update itself, I simply leave it as is and adjust by adding or subtracting an hour as needed. For me, it’s less about the debate and more about appreciating the passage of time in my own way. Whether we have DST or not, I’m going to keep ticking in my own time regardless.. Time waits for no one! Make every second count! After Thoughts and Summary Concerning the Daylight Saving Time debate, as with all debates in general, it's essential to weigh the arguments presented by both sides and reflect on our own perspectives. The question of whether DST truly serves its intended purposes remains open-ended, inviting us to contemplate the implications of tinkering with time itself. The core of the debate is often more about the changing of clocks rather than the use of daylight saving time (DST) itself. Here’s a breakdown of the issues at play: The Biannual Clock Changes : This is the part most people oppose. Twice a year, clocks are shifted by one hour forward in the spring (DST) and then back in the fall (Standard Time). Critics argue that this transition disrupts sleep, causes health issues (like higher rates of heart attacks and strokes), and is generally inconvenient. Most people’s frustration is focused on the disruption caused by these changes, not necessarily on whether it's daylight saving time or standard time. Permanent Daylight Saving Time (DST) : Some people want to make daylight saving time permanent because they enjoy the longer evenings it provides during the spring and summer months. Supporters argue that it improves quality of life by giving people more daylight in the evening for outdoor activities and socializing. They argue it can reduce energy use and improve road safety Permanent Standard Time : Others want to end the clock changes but prefer sticking to standard time year-round. Their argument is that permanent daylight saving time would cause darker mornings in the winter, which could negatively affect children going to school, morning workers, and overall productivity. Some health experts argue that standard time better aligns with our natural circadian rhythms. Let's pause for a moment and ponder: Does Daylight Saving Time brighten our days or cast shadows on our routines? Share your thoughts—Get in Touch! The debate continues as the clock keeps ticking.
- worth less
long hours waiting just to be with you silently life is just passing me by but it's alright, I don't mind I think you are worth my time. knowing you will be in touch soon my mind wanders as the clock ticks but it's alright, I don't mind I think you are worth my thoughts. late nights listening to your voice days devoted to being with you but it's alright, I don't mind I think you are worth my attention. tears, concern and worry, turn to disappointment, sadness, insecurity but you think it's alright, that I don't mind you think I am worth less.
- Hero or Zero
Have you ever wanted to be a hero at some point in your life – to make a real difference and save someone in need? Your donation isn't just alleviating my financial burdens; it's the hope that keeps me breathing through my darkest times while restoring my faith in the kindness of others. I am very thankful for the heroes in my life and the support they have offered. A hero shows genuine concern for others' well-being. They are moved by the suffering of others and feel compelled to help. Heroes are willing to give their time, resources, or money to assist those in need. They don't hesitate to share what they have to make a difference in someone's life. They have the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It allows them to connect deeply with those they are helping. Heroes often put the needs of others before their own. Their actions are motivated by the desire to help rather than personal gain. They are brave enough to take action, even when it's difficult or inconvenient. Heroes are not deterred by challenges or fears when it comes to helping others. A hero can be counted on to be there when needed. They are dependable and follow through on their promises and commitments. Their actions inspire others to also take action and make a difference. Heroes lead by example, showing what it means to be compassionate and giving. They often perform their acts of kindness without seeking recognition or reward. True heroes help out of a genuine desire to make the world a better place. They don't give up easily and are determined to see their efforts through. Heroes continue to help despite obstacles or setbacks. They have a natural inclination to be kind and considerate. This kindness is evident in their actions and the way they treat others, not just their friends, but strangers alike. Have you ever thought, "It's not my problem," and chosen not to get involved? I have shared my story with many, and while I appreciate those who have taken the time to read it, the lack of response has been deeply disheartening. It's difficult to express how vulnerable and exposed I feel, having laid bare my struggles only to be met with silence. This silence has made me feel overlooked and undervalued, as though my plea for help isn't worthy of attention or action. When it is all said and done, I hope no one will wonder with should've, would've, could've statements. Thoughts of remorse for not offering assistance, "I should have donated when I had the chance." Regretful reflections on not stepping in, "I would have helped if I had known how serious it was." Hindsight regrets for not providing support, "I could have made a difference by donating just a little." Second thoughts about choosing not to aid, "I should have reached out to see if she needed anything." Feelings of guilt for not helping out, "I would have contributed if I knew it meant this much." Self-reproach for not getting involved, "I could have taken a few moments to support her campaign." Lingering doubts about not taking action, "I should have shared her GoFundMe with more people." Sorrowful musings on missed opportunities to help, "I would have done more if I realized she was struggling so badly." Remorse for staying on the sidelines, "I could have been there for her instead of just watching from the sidelines." Regrets about not lending a hand, "I should have done something instead of staying silent." Today, as always, you have the choice to be that hero for me or close your eyes and heart to my situation. I believe that everyone has the potential to be a hero in someone's life. Your support is crucial during this challenging time. By contributing to my GoFundMe campaign, you have the power to save me from overwhelming financial and emotional distress. Your generosity can provide the stability I desperately need to keep going. Imagine being the person who stepped in despite what others have done, the hero who helped me find my way back to a life of hope and possibility. Every bit of support counts and helps me to feel seen and valued during this incredibly challenging time. Thank you for any support you can provide. Psalm 31:24 "Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord."

- New Vision, Clear Choices!
I have struggled with vision issues my entire life. I have astigmatism and strabismus ( lazy eye). Astigmatism occurs when the cornea of the eye has an abnormal curvature, causing light to bend differently as it enters the eye. This results in a refractive error that makes objects appear blurry at all distances—an can lead to the development of a lazy eye. A lazy eye occurs when the brain and eye do not work together properly, usually due to abnormal visual development in earl y childhood. The brain favors the stronger eye, which can lead to poor vision in the weaker eye. I have had five or six eye muscle surgeries to correct my lazy eye, some on the right eye and some on the left, in the early to mid nineties, but they were all ineffective and unsuccessful in the long run. I don't have any depth perception which for the most part I have learned when it matters, and what I need to do to compensate. For instance, backing into a parking space removes the chance of a collision with the front bumper of my car. When I wore contacts, I would use one eye for seeing far away and one eye for seeing close up. I would alternate which was which every few years. I need to wear glasses at all times in order to see far away, on the computer, and up close to read. With my new vision insurance starting soon, I have been exploring all the options for customizing my glasses. The base coverage is not bad—an eye exam including dilation, clear plastic single vision, lined bifocal, trifocal or lenticular lenses, and scratch-resistant coating are all included at no cost! Although a frame allowance can be used towards contacts, my insurance does not cover a pricy contact lens exam and fitting—only a basic eye exam! I guess my contact wearing days are a thing of the past. When it comes to upgrades for glasses, there are several optional add-ons to enhance functionality, comfort, or style. When considering what you need, think about your daily habits such as driving at night, spending time in front of the computer, or going outside. All insurance is different, but here is a breakdown of typical upgrades based on the options offered by my insurance, their benefits, and who might want to consider them. Lens Add-Ons Polycarbonate Lenses: These lightweight and impact-resistant lenses are included for people with monocular vision, like myself, or strong prescriptions (+/- 6.00 diopters or more). There is an additional charge if you do not meet this criteria. The benefits may not justify the cost unless you’re highly active or prone to accidents. Plastic Photosensitive Lenses: These lenses automatically adjust to light, darkening outdoors and clearing indoors. They eliminate the need for separate sunglasses. Perfect for anyone frequently transitioning between indoor and outdoor settings. I always get these transition glasses, I always forget I have them until I come inside! Anti-Reflective (AR) Coating: Reduces glare from screens, headlights, and bright lights, making night driving and screen time more comfortable. If you are often in front of screens or drive at night, AR coating is a game-changer. I was not able to get anti-glare last time, but this time it is a must! I hope to be able to choose the premium option which will be the most appropriate for my needs, and only slightly higher in price compared to the standard option. Standard AR Coating Reduces most glare and reflections. Basic functionality to improve clarity and reduce eye strain. A solid choice for general use, especially if you do not need the highest performance or durability, and you are on a budget. Premium AR Coating Offers better scratch resistance and durability than the standard version. Typically includes additional smudge-resistant properties, repels both water and oils, making it easier to clean and keep clean. Ideal for people who want glasses that stay cleaner longer and hold up to everyday wear. For those spending time under lights or in front of screens, Ultra AR Coating The highest level of glare reduction, often including advanced smudge, water, and oil resistance. Also offers blue light filtering. Provides clearer vision in challenging lighting conditions, such as night driving or bright office environments. Best for heavy glasses wearers, those frequently exposed to difficult lighting, or anyone seeking top-tier performance. Progressive Lenses (No-Line Bifocals): Unlike traditional bifocals, these provide a seamless transition between distance, intermediate, and near vision. Standard progressives are nearly half the cost of premium ones which offer sharper optics and wider viewing areas. Premium progressives provide smooth, comfortable vision with clarity at all distances, offering a natural viewing experience at all times. Intermediate Vision Lenses: These lenses improve clarity at mid-range distances, ideal for frequent computer users. High-Index Lenses: Thinner and lighter than standard lenses, high-index lenses are especially useful for strong prescriptions, reducing the weight and bulk of glasses. Polarized Lenses: Block glare from reflective surfaces like water or snow, making them great for outdoor enthusiasts or those who struggle with brightness. Frame Options Exclusive Frame Collection: My insurance covers frames in the Fashion and Designer levels at no cost. I am certain I will be able to find a suitable, simple frame. Premier Level Frames: For an additional fee, one can get access to higher-end styles within the collection. Non-Collection Frames: One can use the frame allowance with a 20% discount on any costs above that. This lets you choose from a wider range of brands and designs if collection frames don’t suit your preferences. Durability Add-Ons Scratch Protection Plan: This is an optional plan for single-vision lenses or for multifocal lenses. It’s a great choice if you’re prone to dropping or mishandling your glasses, as it ensures they’ll stay clear and free of scratches longer. It is my understanding that the anti-glare coating is also scratch resistant. There are so many lens options, and even more options when it comes to frames! I was thinking of stepping outside my comfort zone and get some fun, colorful, and abstract frame, or I may retreat under pressure and choose a plain boring pair! The one thing am certain, I won't be disappointed in my choice. Since moving nearly four years ago, I have not been to an eye doctor, so I am a bit apprehensive going to someone new! I did call one place for more information! As of right now, I will be going to MyEyeDr. Update: An opening came up for this week, so I just made an appointment with MyEyeDr. It turns out my previous eye doctor is part of the MyEyeDr eye care company! I am not sure why I didn't know other than I always made my appointments directly with him. This is good news because I am very pleased with the last glasses I did get from them. I am not sure if my complete record will be available to the new doctor! I already have an idea of the upgrades that would be beneficial for my sight, my confidence, and my mental health. I hope to be able to get the photosensitive lenses with premium no-line bi-focal (or tri-focal) and the premium anti-reflective coating. It has been difficult saving up for glasses, but my Marketplace sales this week have really helped. I am very thankful for the Christmas gift that will allow me to visit the eye doctor at the beginning of the year as opposed to having to wait another month or two! Ecclesiastes 11:7 "Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun."
- Everything Was Peachy Keen: Then I Read the Fine Print!
This post is about what I found on the Kroger website when I looked up the dietary information about the food I was cooking. It made me realize how companies have to do everything to protect themselves from a frivolous lawsuit happy society. I am not saying all lawsuits against large corporations are frivolous, but often people don't take accountability for their own actions and try to blame others when things go wrong. I really wanted to share the way these warnings were listed, hence the reason I started typing this post. Of course I have to go into detail beginning with why I even chose these foods, and not only how I am preparing them, but also how I plan to divide them into individual meals! It is just the way my brain works—for me background information is important for context and a key feature in most stories I tell. In this post, I start from the beginning—grocery day! After describing the meal and preparation, I share the warnings! This week while creating my grocery order, I wanted to find some new meal options. I have been eating the same foods for months, usually the same meal on repeat several days. A decade or more ago, I made some slow cook pork chops with peaches and they were really delicious! I set off in search of the recipe while shopping for ingredients, and instead I found a recipe that uses pork tenderloin , peach preserves, and chicken broth. I bought Kroger® Bacon Brown Sugar Boneless Pork Tenderloin. It was on sale and thought the additional ingredients would add a touch of sweet and savory I wouldn't otherwise add because of additional cost. The recipe couldn't be any easier—dump all the ingredients in the crockpot and cook on low for six to seven hours! Already awake at four in the morning, I calculated it would be ready by lunchtime if I started it cooking! In addition to the tenderloin, I decided to pair it with coleslaw. I already had the dressing, and I always run the packaged slaw through a food processor first to make it easier to enjoy. I chose to put the slaw evenly into six of my eight ounce glass jars. After the tenderloin finishes cooking, I plan to divide it and the peach sauce into six single compartment meal containers . It is important to separate out the food into individual servings in order to spread my eating out throughout the day without overindulging. I finished running the slaw through the processor and had it all mixed up when I decided to look on the bag to see what constituted a serving. The nutrition information on the bag indicated it held five servings—close enough for me! Once I diced it up more finely, and mixed it with dressing, it divided well into the six servings I had anticipated. I wanted to buy the three color blend of green cabbage, red cabbage, carrot, but I did not see it. Instead, I settled for only green cabbage and carrot—good, but with less of a kick. I already wrapped up and discarded the tenderloin package, but I remembered that Kroger has pictures of the items with the dietary information displayed. I quickly found out that four ounces is a serving size, and dividing it out into six individual containers would work well for me. If I was calorie counting, the slightly larger six ounce serving I planned would only be about 450 calories including the peach preserves and coleslaw. What caught my eye on the website was shocking! The ingredients, allergen information, and a disclaimer were listed. If you are allergic to something, this information is not very helpful because it seems every allergen is listed whether it is in the product or not! The disclaimer has to be because of lawsuits and to avoid liability. I just really found it interesting and wanted to share! I understand! I have a lot of disclaimers on this website, and feel like I need disclaimers when selling or even volunteering! Many people look for issues and it is my experience issues can be created from nothing given the right spin. The disclaimer is the same for all three products, so I will list it only one time followed by the individual products including the ingredients and allergen information for each. Disclaimer: Actual product packaging and materials may contain additional and/or different ingredient, nutritional, or proper usage information than the information displayed on our website. Looking at the dietary information and disclaimers on the Kroger website made me think about how companies work to provide transparency while protecting themselves from potential liability. Sharing this process, from choosing ingredients to preparing meals, felt important because it shows how I approach meal planning and how I came to find these labels and disclaimers—which can affect us as consumers. I hope this post has been as interesting for you as it was for me. Whenever I look at ingredient lists, I recall my oldest brother, as early as 1974 when he was only 19 years old, super upset about processed foods and the chemicals listed on boxed items. Looking back, his concern feels ahead of its time, considering there were no personal computers to quickly share information, only a few TV channels, and limited public awareness about food additives and their potential effects. If you’ve seen any unusual or surprising disclaimers or warning labels or signs, feel free to share your thoughts or experiences in the comments—I’d love to hear them! I would also encourage you to share your thoughts and words on any number of topics. Look at the submission guidelines and let your voice be heard!
